The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
We are looking for a Technical Officer to join the Electron Microscopy Core Facility. The position will entail dealing with ultrastructural analysis in various biological systems: cultured yeast, insect and mammalian cells, model organisms such as flies, nematodes, fishes and rodents. The main tasks for the post holder will include sample preparation and visualization in Electron Microscopy. This requires a good mastering of the fixation methods (chemical and cryo), resin embedding, ultramicrotomy (room temperature and cryo) as well as the various immunocytochemistry methods. Additional skills in correlative methods (CLEM), in 3D EM (e.g. TEM tomography or automated serial imaging by SEM) or in CEMOVIS would be an advantage.
The candidate will also have the responsibility of maintaining the overall organization of the Facility at high degree of technological expertise, e.g. including availability of various stock solutions of specific EM reagents in the laboratory. Ideally, the applicant should have knowledge in light microscopy and/or in molecular biology and/or in image processing. The candidate should be open to acquire skills for new techniques and adapt them to various cell/organism samples.
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires qualification in the field of EM applications to cell biology. The candidate should be able to work both independently and as part of a team in the Core Facility unit. He/she should be highly motivated and have good communication and organizational skills. Interaction, communication and basic teaching skills are essential.
