Switzerland has established a major new drive in Neuroscience by forming the Brain Mind Institute. It is a rare opportunity to form a Neuroscience Institute that is unconstrained by tradition, constructed as a network of closely related laboratories, on a foundation of futuristic technology, in a manner that can be recurrently interconnected with labs around the world and a vision to go beyond established concepts to explore the emergence of higher brain function.

The BMI is composed of an international faculty with a target of 18 laboratories and more than 200 resear chers. It is dedicated to exploring the emergence of higher brain function cross multiple levels ranging from gene expression to cognition and covering multiple brain regions including the primary sensory and motor areas, the hippocampus, and limbic system.

The institute is composed of 7 sections

  • Molecular Neuroscience
  • Cellular Neuroscience
  • Systems Neuroscience
  • Behavioural Neuroscience
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Psychiatric Neuroscience and
  • Computational Neuroscience

Each of the BMI sections are equipped with the state-or-art equipment, techniques and approaches.

The BMI is merging with clinical and industrial partners in the Lake Geneva area:

  • cognitive neuroscience with the University of Geneva
  • psychiatry with Cery at the University of Lausanne
  • sports neuroscience with a transfaculty center for sports rehabilitation and engineering
  • basic research into flavour perception with Nestle
